This video features the lyrics of Lupang Hinirang, the Philippine National Anthem. The marching melody of this anthem was composed by Julian Felipe in 1898, at the request of General Emilio Aguinaldo. The lyrics was originally from José Palma’s 1899 Spanish poem titled “Filipinas.” Evidence suggests Palma’s piece was derived from Mariano Proceso Pabalan’s Kapampangan poem “Labuad Mapalad.”

Although the music composed by Felipe remained the same, the lyrics of the National Anthem changed from time to time. In 1920, during the American colonization, the Philippine National Anthem was translated into English by Camilo Osias and Mary A. Lane. Titled “The Philippine Hymn,” this version was adopted in 1934 by the Philippine Commonwealth as the official version.
Under the Japanese occupation, the first Tagalog versions of the National Anthem were produced, although “Diwa ng Bayan” was the official version allowed by the Japanese. By 1948, the official version sanctioned by the Third Republic of the Philippines was titled “O Sintang Bayan.”

The current version of the National Anthem is a product of President Ramon Magsaysay’s efforts to produce and finalize an official Filipino version for the Philippines. The initial version was made by Ildefonso Santos and Julian Cruz Balmaceda. But by 1956, the translation produced by Surian ng Wikang Pambansa was eventually sanctioned as the official Philippine National Anthem.
