Despite technological advancements in cancer research and innovation, long NHS waiting lists and budget shortfalls are having detrimental effects on patients.

The number of people getting cancer is increasing - with a projected increase of one fifth by 2040 - and the NHS is failing to meet its targets for waiting times.

Cancer Research UK, which the King recently became the patron of after receiving cancer treatment himself, estimates there will be a £1bn gap in research funding within the next decade.
