Elon Musk Says NASAs New 3D Printed Rocket Engine Is A SUCCESS!

According to Musk, when it comes to space travel and exploration, rocket technology is an essential component. It has been critical in moving humanity beyond the boundaries of our planet and into the immense expanse of the universe. Rocket engines have undergone developments over the years, which have resulted in a revolution in space missions. The breakthroughs that have been made have not only made it possible for humanity to explore new territories, but they have also increased our comprehension of the universe. Our ability to travel further into space has been made possible by the development of more powerful engines, more modern materials, and increased fuel efficiency.

An increasing number of new solutions, such as reusable rockets, next-generation propulsion systems, and manufacturing techniques that are more efficient, are being developed as we continue to push the boundaries of rocketry. These solutions promise to make space travel more accessible and cost-effective.

And in today’s video, we will delve into NASAs new 3D printed rocket engine, which successfully produces 5,800 pounds of thrust recently.

An revolutionary propulsion system known as the Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) has been successful in its development by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). An innovative, 3D-printed RDRE was successfully tested by engineers at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, for a period of 251 seconds, which is equivalent to more than four minutes. The tests resulted in the production of more than 5,800 pounds of thrust.

According to Thomas Teasley, an engineer at Marshall who specializes in combustion devices and is in charge of the RDRE test effort at the center, this kind of prolonged burn simulates the normal requirements for a lander touchdown or a deep-space burn that could put a spaceship on a path that would take it from the Moon to Mars.

In the summer of 2022, the first hot fire test being conducted by RDRE was carried out at Marshall University in collaboration with In Space LLC and Purdue University, both of which are located in Lafayette, Indiana. More over 4,000 pounds of torque were generated during that test for a period of roughly one minute. According to Teasley, the primary objective of the most recent test is to gain a better understanding of how to scale the combustor to different thrust classes.

This will allow the combustor to support engine systems of all types and maximize the variety of missions that it could serve. These missions include landers, upper stage engines, and supersonic retropropulsion, which is a technique of deceleration that could land larger payloads – or even humans – on the surface of Mars.

"The RDRE makes it possible to make a significant leap in design efficiency," he stated. In light of this, it is clear that we are getting closer to developing lightweight propulsion systems that will enable us to deliver greater mass and payload further into deep space. This is an essential component of NASA's aim of sending spacecraft from the Moon to Mars.
