Building a large clear span outdoor structure to support a glass roof, we used full dimension 8" X 8" Cedar posts set into the framework, glued and bolted through a galvanized "tang" . Here we made the starter cuts with a circular saw then finished the cuts with a fine toothed chainsaw. The final cut is then a "plunge cut" to provide a slot for the tang.
