When we rescue damaged dogs from shelters, we are given 2 choices: 1. Feel sorry for them because of their past, or 2. Set them up for success by helping them move forward. The sooner we let go of their “story“ the faster we can begin to help them find balance. Giving a traumatized dog excessive amounts of unearned affection will only set him up for failure. And, it may inadvertently put other members of the family in danger. Providing guidance, structure and discipline is the first step to healing a wounded dog’s psyche.
