In the 1800s, ships came in many shapes and sizes, but they were all powered by the wind, had a lot of masts covered in sails, and were mainly constructed of wood. For defensive reasons, a handful of them had cannons. Whether it was a warship, a merchant vessel, or a whaling ship—all of these roles required ships of the 1800s to have distinct appearances.
