Today we will be preparing for the first forecasted winter snow storm. When we expect weather that can impact the sheep flock and their environment we need to add clean dry straw to the barns. In order to spread round bales of bean straw, we like to relocate the sheep into a separate barn and assess their condition.

This simplifies spreading the straw when the animals are not there because they can get in front of the bales and make it harder to unroll. And sometimes the straw is dry and dusty which can make it hard on their breathing.

We can also use this opportunity to run the flock into the handling equipment to assess their body condition, udders, feet and wool. We can weigh the flock and they become easier to work with in the handling equipment because the more familiar they are with running through the system and the alleys, they easier it is to use and the less stress endured by the sheep.
