Weld neck flanges are used in critical services which are of high temperature and pressure, carrying toxic or flammable fluids. For such services, radiography of welds is essential. As these flanges have a neck which is butt welded to pipe, it easy to radiograph this weld. These flanges are expensive compared to other flange types such as slip on flanges. These are manufactured as per ASME B16.5 for sizes from 1/2" to 24" and as per ASME B16.47 for sizes from 26" to 60". Large diameter flanges are made in type A and B, where type B flanges are smaller in diameter for used where space is limited such as on offshore platforms, ships etc.
