Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a yellow spice, part of the ginger family

It has been empirically used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine in a wide variety of diseases and conditions.
Curcumin is the primary curcuminoid and main active component in turmeric and the compound.
Curcumin may have a number of benefits that may confer neuroprotection
1. Reduced Glutamate excitotoxicity
2. Increased neurotrophin production and neurogenesis
3. Dampened glucocorticoid resistance and improved HPA axis regulation
4. Improved insulin sensitivity
5. Reduced leaky gut
6. Reduced oxidative stress
7. Anti Inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects

Trials have shown benefits in reducing depressive and anxiety symptoms. However more research is needed with regards to the dose needed to treat depression.
