A former Yakima police officer suspected of killing his ex-wife and girlfriend was found dead along I-5 in Eugene, Oregon, Tuesday afternoon after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The West Richland Police Department (WRPD) announced on Tuesday that around 3 p.m., Oregon State Police (OSP) located Elias Huizar, 40, driving southbound on I-5 near Eugene, and initiated a pursuit. The WRPD said the pursuit ended with the OSP reporting that Huizar shot himself in the head.

Troopers pursued Huizar's vehicle at high speeds and at one point exchanged gunfire with him, according to OSP Capt. Kyle Kennedy. The pursuit, over about 25 miles (40 kilometers), ended when Huizar's vehicle hit a commercial vehicle that was stopped on the interstate because of an unrelated crash.
