Product Review HO Tangent FMC Boxcar SSW - Accurate Cotton Belt Boxcar!

Southern Pacific’s B-70-42 50’ high cube boxcars were built by FMC Gunderson in the late 1960s.

They had two 8’ Youngstown plug doors on each side and Hydra-Cushion under frames. In addition to SP, similar cars were purchased by Denver & Rio Grande Western and SP subsidiary Cotton Belt.

In the 1990s some of the SP and Cotton Belt cars were repainted into the blue Golden West Service scheme. Tangent offers these cars with road specific details painted for all of these railroads.

A number of the Cotton Belt cars were rebuilt and repainted in 1984 and re-classified as B-70-42 Rs. Most of the photos I found show these cars stenciled “for paper loading only”.

Many of these cars lasted into the 2000s.

As always, Dan evaluates this HO scale model train's packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards.
