This video shows how to create an image of your signature with a transparent background using Windows 7 (or newer) and Paint.net.

Paint.net is a free utility for editing images. You can get it here:
http://www.getpaint.net

Once you create the image of your signature with a transparent background, you can insert it into Word (and other) documents and position it over a signature line, and the line will show through as if you actually hand-wrote the signature. You can also save it as an AutoText entry to make it quick to pop into any document, any time.
