I have just achieved the milestone of One Year on YouTube in the Finance Space as a Content Creator! Find out what I learned and how I plan to applied the principles of compounding to grow my channel in the next year!

What did I learn?

- You need to learn a lot of skills to start a YouTube channel!
- Video, audio, lighting, SEO, keywords, editing, presenting etc..
- I am still new at the process as I have released less that 50 videos so far.

What did I struggle with?

Consistency has been difficult. My plan was always to try and get at least one video out per week, I am on 44 videos after one year so I have fallen short of that target!

From when I started the channel I promised that I wasn’t going to judge too much on how I did until I have made at least one hundred videos. I would like to think I can get to that target in the next year.

Applying compounding principles to my channel

In true investing style I think we can look at growing a YouTube channel in a very similar way to how compounding works in an investment.

Average Watch Hours – Nov 2020 vs Oct 2021

November 2020 – Total Watch Hours = 20.7 / Average Watch Hours Per Day = 0.69
November 2020 – Excluding Intro Video Launch on Nov 2nd = 14.2 / Average Watch Hours Per Day = 0.51
December 2020 – Watch Hours = 9 / Average Per Day = 0.29
January 2021 – Watch Hour = 10.3 / 0.33
February 2021 – Watch Hours = 8.4 / 0.3
March 2021 – Watch Hours = 21.3 / 0.69
April 2021 – Watch Hours = 36.7 / 1.22
May 2021 – Watch Hours = 38.1 / 1.23
June 2021 – Watch Hours = 58.5 / 1.95
July 2021 – Watch Hours = 82.5 / 2.66
August 2021 – Watch Hours = 64.6 / 2.08
September 2021 – Watch Hours = 56.2 / 1.87
October 2021 – Watch. Hours = 63.8 / 2.06

We can see from this that in one year we have two doubles of the watch hours during that time. For November we are looking at 0.5 watch hours per day and as of October which finish a few days ago I am looking at just over 2 hours per day.

In theory this time should actually start to accelerate as I am adding more and more videos to the library giving more options and opportunity for viewers.

If we do a quick Rule of 72….

We have had 12 months and I have seen 2 doubles, so that’s a double every 6 months. There are 12 sixes in 72, so this is a compound growth of 12% per month!

And from an investing stand point 12% would be a decent annual market return in normal circumstances and beats the S&P 500 average over the last 50 years.

Subscribers

My subscriber growth has been a bit more linear. I haven’t seen any real compounding in terms of growth of subscribers. I am normally getting somewhere between 15 – 20 new subscribers each month.

But I believe if I keep trying to improve my content and give back more value and then eventually that will reflect in growth as a byproduct of better videos.

This is really something I enjoy doing and I don’t intent to stop!

Hopefully I can improve on the consistency side of things.

I have learned a lot about the subjects I’ve cover as you really need to understand things in depth to teach them!

Finally…

Thanks for your support throughout the year, and I look forward to improving my videos over the next year.

If you are thinking about starting a channel, go for it! You will learn so many useful skills

Enjoy the video!
