A gout attack is almost always extremely painful. Any joint can be affected with many people having attacks of gout in the knee gout in the ankle gout in the hands and fingers and quite commonly gout in the toe (particularly the big toe).

The symptoms of gout are due to increased levels of uric acid in the blood. The uric acid precipitates and forms needle-like crystals and these crystals accumulate in joints and result in symptoms of swelling severe pain and over time the formation of nodules called gouty tophi. People whose gout is particularly severe deposit many tophi in various joints and other locations and are said to have tophaceous gout.

In this video my client Brodi who has been diagnosed with tophaceous gout has gout flares very frequently and these present significant challenges to his general lifestyle as a busy professional helicopter pilot spinning instructor and entrepreneur.

Also training - lifting weights with gout is very challenging. Gout and tophi limit his range of motion at his shoulders elbows and wrists. His grip strength is affected by gout in wrists hands and fingers and so we focus on selecting the best exercises for him and remaining within his active range of motion on all exercises.

Aside from training challenges different foods can cause gout attacks. Importantly most of the food triggers are protein sources - the critical macronutrient to support a resistance training program. Meats of almost any sort and shellfish are strong triggers for Brodi's gout and must be avoided. His protein sources are limited to small quantities of chicken fish and plant-based proteins. A so-called gout diet can be quite restrictive and may make it difficult to meet macronutrient targets for maximizing muscle growth or hypertrophy.

Gout treatment includes avoiding food triggers as well as a number of gout medicines. Unfortunately many medications can themselves trigger gout as well as cause weight gain - which puts Brodi at a real disadvantage when training to achieve his body transformation goals.

In the second video in this series Brodi and I will go through a typical workout so that you can see the exercises we choose and how we execute them in order to effectively train with gout - a gout workout if you will.
