Girona is a city in northern Catalonia, Spain, at the confluence of the Ter, Onyar, Galligants and Güell rivers. The city officially had 103,369 inhabitants in 2020. Girona is the capital of the province of the same name and also the capital of the comarca of Gironès and the vegueriade Girona. The city is located 99 km (62 mi) northeast of Barcelona. The first historical inhabitants of the area were Iberians; Girona is the ancient Gerunda, a city of the Ausetani. Later, the Romans built a citadel there, which received the name of Gerunda .
