Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with a presentation from members of the Piikani Nation Lands Department and The Resilience Institute.

For generations, the Pi’ikanni people have lived in south-west Alberta, adapting and moving forward in the face of unpredictable environmental changes, guided by their cultural strengths.

What has made the Pi’ikanni resilient in the face of environmental change and the legacies of colonization? As impacts from climate change increasingly worsens, it is crucial for Indigenous communities to understand how to support and develop the attributes that make them resilient.

Over the last half decade, The Resilience Institute and Piikani Nation have collaborated to figure out the answer. Co-created activities produce reciprocal learning between Indigenous and scientific experts and the partnership has seen many successful projects, including a greenhouse program, air quality monitoring, flood adaptation strategies, and youth-led documentation of resilience strategies.

This webinar was delivered on June 23, 2023 with the Resilience Institute focusing on initiatives led by the Piikani Nation, which includes a project funded by the Government of Alberta through the Climate Resilience Capacity Building Program administered by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre.
