Tesla finally released a tow hitch for the Model Y and it is now currently available to add via the online configurator, which is very exciting…. Thanks to Tesmanian who released some very cool information back in March about the Model Y being equipped with a feature called Trailer Mode. which certainly indicated that the Model Y would come equipped and ready tow. But as deliveries began new owners scoured the owners manual and some even took apart the bumper to find nothing relating to towing at all…….
So now that Tesla has finally released some details lets dive into the Tesla Model Y’s towing capacity as I know many of you have been waiting for this.

So a few things that I find odd is that there is no mention of the Hitch or towing capacity in the owners manual as mentioned earlier. Typically the owners manual lists a complete guide so you have a clear understanding of what the vehicles capacity and limitations are. Knowing them is pretty crucial in my opinion, I mean Tesla should be more than happy provide this info so that people don’t overload the vehicle which could cause harm the engine, axles, brakes and more, but more importantly you need to know the limitations for safety reasons.

Don’t you agree, I don’t understand the thought behind why Tesla didn’t include this information in the manual and why it wasn’t available when the vehicle was launched. Is it because they wanted to surprise everyone with a new feature??

Who knows, so what I am going to do for you today is break down the class II towing capacity and show you some of the limitations it has and what you need to be aware of before you go and connect something to your Model Y.

When it comes to towing you might come across a range of terms, so I thought it would be a good idea to know what they all mean.

GVWR - 'Gross Vehicle Weight Rating:' Maximum weight the vehicle can tolerate for the driver, any passengers, cargo, accessories and components.
GTW - 'Gross Trailer Weight' The maximum weight for a trailer along with its contents.q
GCWR - 'Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating:' The maximum amount of gross weight for the trailer, the vehicle and all its contents, including passengers and cargo.q
GAWR - 'Gross Axle Weight Rating:' The maximum weight allowed on a single axle for towing purposes.
TW - 'Tongue Weight:' The amount of downward force placed on the towing vehicle at the trailer hitch (tongue). Which is roughly 10% to 15% of GTW

Alright so now that we covered some basic terms lets take a quick look at the specs that Tesla released for the Model Y’s towing capacity. The Model Y is equipped with a Class II steel tow bar, Capable of towing up to 3,500 lbs. Sounds pretty good right? So with the max towing capacity of 3500LBS indicates that the Model Y will have a max tongue weight between 350-525LBS or 10-15% of the Gross Trailer Weight which remember is The maximum weight for a trailer along with its contents.

So why are these numbers so important? Well as mentioned earlier you don’t want to overload the vehicle which could cause harm and strain to the engine, axles, brakes and more, but more importantly you need to know the limitations for safety reasons. If you try and tow a 10,000LB boat you are going to break your Model Y…..

All in all I think that Model Y’s towing capacity is great and is very comparable if not better than other vehicles in its class, and I think that it will meet a ton needs and most people will be extremely happy with the towing capacity of the Model Y. So I bet you'r wondering geez what I can tow with the Model Y (make dream cloudy and fade to pulling boat, camper, jet ski’s etc.

So as long as you stay within the towing capacity of the Model Y you'r going to be able to tow all kinds of stuff (maybe you can even convince your wife to buy that boat you’ve always dreamed about). Well folks there you have it that is the towing capacity of the Model Y, I hope I was able to provide some useful information as it relates to the towing capacity of the Model Y and some terms that you should become familiar with if you plan on using your model Y to tow. and what the Model Y.
