This episode delves into the rather insane and nonsensical occupational licensing requirements in California. For instance, it takes 160 hours of training in California to become an EMT, but tens times that (1600 hours) to become a cosmetologist. There are many more examples of this. And it wasn't always this way. Occupational licensing is on the rise in California and elsewhere. Unfortunately, the rationale these industries give is to make us "safer," but their effect is to squeeze out lower income people from good jobs, and many economists think that's exactly the point: to artificially constrict competition among those already well established in an industry.
