Under the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty both the United States and the Soviet Union had to designate one area to protect from missile attack. The USA chose North Dakota and the Soviet Union chose Moscow. The Don-2N radar is designed to be the control centre of the system and can operate autonomously if connection is lost to its command and control centre. The 1998 SIOP targeted this radar facility with 69 consecutive nuclear weapons. The Don-2N radar (Russian: Дон-2Н, NATO: Pill Box) is a large missile defense and early warning passive electronically scanned array radar outside Moscow, and a key part of the Russian A-135 anti-ballistic missile system designed for the defense of the capital against ballistic missiles. Located in the Pushkino district of Moscow it is a quadrangular frustum 33 metres (108 ft) tall with sides 130 metres (427 ft) long at the bottom, and 90 metres (295 ft) long at the top. Each of its four faces has an 18 metres (59 ft) diameter Ultra high frequency band radar giving 360 degree coverage. The system is run by an Elbrus-2 (Russian: Эльбрус-2) supercomputer. The prototype Don radar, called Don-2NP (Russian: Дон-2НП, NATO: Horse Leg) is in Sary Shagan test site in Kazakhstan, location 46°0′11″N 73°38′58″E.
Modernization: The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation in 2018 published a video of the test launch of a new rocket. The product was called a “modernized rocket” - without indicating the type and modification. Among experts, an assumption appeared that the modernized PRS-1M / 45T6 missile passed new tests. Due to the high responsibility and secrecy, detailed information was not reported. In a number of sources, the «Amur» modernization project is referred to as A-235 and under the code “Samolet-M”. According to recent news, the A-135 modernization project has already reached the stage of direct updating of the material part. Last year, the replacement of Don-2N radar equipment was mentioned. The Russian Federation is testing a promising missile interceptor PRS-1 at the Sary-Shagan (Kazakhstan) training ground, created on the basis of the serial 53T6. The exact characteristics of PRS-1M are still unknown; the same is true with information about the capabilities of such a missile defense.

Дон-2Н (по кодификации НАТО «Pill Box») — стационарная многофункциональная радиолокационная станция кругового обзора сантиметрового диапазона, созданная в рамках выполнения задач ПРО Москвы. Функционирование РЛС обеспечивается входящим в её состав вычислительным комплексом производительностью до миллиарда операций в секунду, построенном на основе четырёх десятипроцессорных суперкомпьютеров Эльбрус-2. Единственная действующая станция такого типа расположена вблизи посёлка городского типа Софрино в Пушкинском районе (Московская область). Опытный образец станции Дон-2НП (по кодификации НАТО «Horse Leg») был развернут на полигоне «А» в Сары-Шагане (Казахстан). Назначение: Контроль космического пространства России и стран Содружества, обнаружение атак баллистических ракет, их сопровождение и наведение противоракет.
