In this video, I am going to show you how to fix a non-latching door the correct way. No bending hinges or putting cardboard behind the hinge.

There are several reasons a once latching door becomes a non- latching door. Probably the most common problem is loose hinges. Hinges can become loose several ways. Number one is children, we have all seen a child hold themselves off the ground by the door knob and swinging the door. This put a tremendous amount of stress on the hinges and screws hold them in place and will pull the screws out over time. When this happens in most cases the screw will no longer tighten and need to be replaced with a longer screw.

Another reason is door slamming, This also creates stress on the hinges and screws that can cause the screws to loosen. Door slamming can also move the door jam itself from the force hitting against it, shifting it in such a way the door no longer latches.

The third reason is home settling or shifting due to frost or moisture in the ground or if the home is newer a foundation base that was not well compacted.

If the door no longer latches because the strike plate and latch no longer line up correctly the best course of action is to shim the hinge with the proper shim.

Door hinge shims can be found in multiple stores and also on-line they are available for 3 and one half inch hinges and 4 inch hinges.

If the latch is lower than the opening in the strike the bottom and center hinge will need to be shimmed and if the latch is higher than the strike the top and center hinge will need to be shimmed.
