Marilyn Rudolph, RN, BSN, MBA, a Faculty member at the Institute for Healthcare Optimization (IHO), ties together patient flow, care quality, and patient safety by talking about what focusing on operations management can do for hospitals. While hospitals cannot control the fluctuations of patients coming into their EDs, they can control the scheduling of elective surgeries and procedures. Managing perioperative flow with ED trends in mind can significantly smooth overall variability in a hospital's patient flow--allowing more efficient use of limited resources.
