While hospitals cannot control the fluctuations of patients coming into their EDs, they can control the scheduling of elective surgeries and procedures. Managing perioperative flow with ED trends in mind can significantly smooth overall variability in a hospital's patient flow--allowing more efficient use of limited resources.
