The following video is a sneak preview of today's one on one session with an Italian street dog but also gives you a basic insight into Slip leads.

As you know we use Slip leads with 9 out of 10 of the dogs we work with. They are a fantastic tool.

Wether you have a hyper dog, a reactive dog or a nervous dog the slip lead is often our go to tool.

A slip lead works by applying pressure and when the dog does what is asked of them (mainly pulling) the pressure is turned off. All dogs understand the concept of pressure. We teach the dog pressure and we teach the dog how to turn off the pressure. It's simple and straight forward and the dogs understand it.

When we put a slip lead on, we position it as high up on the head as it goes, this gives you maximum control and also it does not sit on the sensitive part of the dogs throat.
Dogs that wear flat buckle collars when they pull will often make choking sounds or sound like they are gasping for air, it's because of the way the normal collar sits and the fact that it does not distribute even pressure.

We always slowly introduce the slip lead (just like any tool) and break it down in baby steps.

Below is how we introduce the slip lead and how we use it to communicate to the dog to stop pulling.

Stay tuned for the whole of this session including how the dog was before and how the dog does afterwards.
