The president of Vietnam, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, has stepped down following pressure from top political leaders of the Communist Party. Members have blamed Phuc for corruption in his lower ranks.
This is happening at a time when the single-party state has embarked on an anti-corruption drive.
Phuc had held the position for less than two years. He was regarded as a pro-business leader who welcomed trade liberalization, signing deals with the EU, Japan, and Australia at a time when global manufacturing has been shifting away from China to Southeast Asia.
