In this world-first comparison test, we pit the only two hydrogen-powered cars in Australia, the Hyundai Nexo and Toyota Mirai, head-to-head in a long-distance road test scenario which will be familiar to many Aussie travellers.

Our purpose is not so much to find a winner, as it is to demonstrate and explore the pros and cons of one of the only alternatives to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the market. Along the way we'll explain the why and how of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology, as well as address some of its drawbacks when it comes to infrastructure.

Our test route, covering a distance of over 400km from Canberra to Sydney (the long way) would be a challenge for any electric vehicle, and will allow us to really test the range claims of the Nexo and Mirai, on a route which neither vehicle has ever travelled before.

With nowhere to refuel along the way, there's an honest question as to whether we'll even make the distance.

As with all our CarsGuide comparison tests, we'll also briefly cover the design, features, practicality, and drive experience offered by our two competitors.
