The target was £40m pounds worth of gold bullion and £40m in cash, stored at the Swissport Cargo Warehouse at Heathrow Airport. On 17th May 2004, armed police were lying in wait for the gang as a white Transit van smashed into warehouse doors. Police had been on high alert due to an increase in crime at Heathrow. The gang threatened staff with firearms, knives and other weapons after reversing at speed through the warehouse shutters. They forced their way into a secure area containing a large quantity of precious metal and bank notes. But as the men tried to escape, officers lying in wait, ambushed the gang and caught them in the act.. Eight men were sentenced for total of 66 years; one fled the scene and was never caught. It would have been the biggest heist of all time if they had succeeded. Interviews are available with Barry Phillips from the investigating Police Flying Squad.
