When you think of a film shoot, what are the first jobs that come to mind?

Acting, directing, and camera are probably up there, but there are so many different departments and niches to think about. Especially on earlier sets, you might want to capitalize on skills you already have. Once you've made some connections you can work on vectoring towards whatever it is you want to be doing as your career.

In this video we're going to go over all the departments and roles and the ways in which they're all interconnected. So many people in my program start off thinking they're very sure about where they want to end up and then realize, once they get on set, that there's another path that really intrigues them.

You don't need to know what you want to do right now, and you'll have opportunities to work as an assistant in as many departments as you want. Knowledge about how all the different departments work is very attractive to professionals. It makes you much easier to work with when you're aware of everything going on as opposed to only the things you are directly responsible for. If you are thinking of becoming a director or producer this type of holistic familiarity is critical. Knowing what issues departments commonly run into, how much things cost, and how long it takes to get the required shots are just a few of the things you need to know.
