As the snow falls, Cathy and Peter spend their time knitting and finishing a pair of moccasins. Peter, of course, relates a wee bit of history.

Then, as Cathy prepares her sister-in-law, Pat's, carrot and potato soup, Peter makes dye from walnuts and dyes two of his old trade shirts.

Pat's Potato and Carrot Soup recipe:

6 medium carrots
2 medium potatoes
1.5 cups of chicken stock (or water and bouillon cubes)
1/4 cup butter
1 large onion
3 Tbsp flour
3 cups milk
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
salt/pepper etc. to taste

Cut up carrots and potatoes, boil in the chicken stock until tender. Gently cook the diced onions in the butter. Remove from heat, add the flour and blend well. Add the milk and then add the concoction to the vegetable mixture. stir constantly until boiling. You may want to mash some of the potatoes and carrots to make a thicker consistency.
