This instructional DIY video shows under two minutes how to remove the airbag and steering wheel off a BMW X3 (E83). This model is a 2005 but relates to older and newer versions too.
I then covered the facing with carbon fibre wrap to give it a more modern look and to hide the wear and tear on the steering wheel. I've skimmed over this but for a more detailed video, click the link below by Bimmiancom.
Re-installing is common sense, replacing the connectors and screws etc in reverse order.
