In this video I'm showing you the painting process for painting a Hobbit door on a rock. The first step, which is to coat the rock surface with a base layer of acrylic paint, is not shown. When I finished this painting I also sprayed the entire rock with acrylic varnish to protect the paint from weather. My supplies are listed below:

• 1 rock - look for one with a smooth surface that will fit the shape of the artwork.
• Acrylic craft paint - this will be weather-resistant when dry, but the varnish will help it last longer.
• Gouache paint - this is not waterproof but I liked the colors I had on hand so I used it anyway. The varnish was required for these colors to stay on the rock. If you have the colors you want to use already in acrylic form, go with those.
• 1 paint brush with a small tip
• water, mixing tray (can be anything - even a piece of aluminum foil), and a paper towel or cloth to dab your brush when it is too wet.
• Acrylic varnish such as Krylon UV resistant clear gloss spray. This will protect the paint from fading and seal the design in place. I used 2 coats of this around the entire rock.
