Dietfried sees Violet as nothing but a tool, refers her to "hey you" (and the derogatory kisama in Japanese), and blames her for the death of his brother. However, gradually Dietfried comes to term with just who and what Violet is. He sees her lay her life down without an ounce of hesitation for him, who has done nothing but treat her so poorly. Although the emerald brooch has been an irritation to Dietfried because it reminds him of Gilbert, he sees just how much Violet treasures it. With remorse, he sees Violet holds on dearly to the brooch after losing it to the rebel leader. Hearing Violet explains to his mother her relationship with Gilbert, Dietfried comes to see just how much Violet loves his brother and carries the burden of guilt over his death. Seeing how she still stands tall and strives in life even after losing her arms, her Major, and everything else, Dietfried develops a sense of admiration for his former tool. His brother has treated her with nothing but love and respect. With a change in perspective, Dietfried tells Violet to live his brother's share of life.
