This video I see if I can sharpen a couple knives on a piece of sandstone given to me by a friend. I know in the past people used to have treadle/ hand crank powered sand stone wheels. But I wanted to see how well it sharpened when used as a bench stone.
I sharpened a handmade knife of mine made out of 1084 High Carbon steel and a Mundial stainless steel paring knife.
Whilst the stone was in no way optimal compared to a proper sharpening stone I would call it a success and it even performed better than some cheap stones I have used in the past once the sandstone started to get a slurry.
The edge was a bit rough but if you are practicing survival skills or primitive skill or just having some fun. My verdict is that you can get a working edge using sandstone.
