Most people assume that lowering the volume of a sound is the best (or only) way to make it less intense as a starting point for desensitization. But this is not always true for electronic beeps, which are often quiet to begin with.

This video shows graduated exposures to beeps that varied on frequency (low to high) and duration (longer to very short). Zani's conditioning was a success.
