No matter how hard you try, you can't seem to get anything done 😞.
You're tired and overwhelmed even when the task is simple. It's called burnout, and it affects people with ADHD more than anyone else.

Hi 👋 ! My Name is Alice, I created The Mini ADHD Coach in august 2020 when I was just diagnosed with ADHD at 29.
After years of questioning, therapy, burnout, and chaotic career path changes, I finally understood why I struggled with so many things.
So I decided to share what I learned to raise awareness around ADHD and help the ADHD community thrive.

Most of you may agree that people with ADHD are just perceived to be hyperactive, impulsive, or distracted. Well, they’re not wrong. But these are just some of the more commonly known symptoms of ADHD.

One of the more difficult experiences of people with ADHD, diagnosed or not, is coping with burnout or fatigue.

Getting burnt out can be feeling physically and emotionally tired and not motivated to do anything. You might also get intense headaches or stomachaches.

Some causes of burnout are heavy workload, feeling like you can’t control your situation, lack of social support, and perceived unfair treatment.

Now, how does this relate to ADHD?
Some ADHD symptoms can keep us on overdrive, but in the end, it can leave our batteries drained, thus the fatigue and burnout. And vice-versa, if you feel burnt out constantly because of constant spikes of energy, this may be a sign of undiagnosed ADHD – check with your doctor just in case.

And how exactly does having ADHD symptoms lead to burnout? Let’s go through the factors one by one.

The most obvious one is hyperactivity. Working adults with ADHD, like me, are vulnerable to take on more work because we want to be in constant motion. This can inevitably lead to mental exhaustion.

And closely connected to hyperactivity is hyperfocus. We get so engrossed in tasks at work that we sometimes don’t have space to breathe. And having that kind of deprivation can cause us to break down.

Speaking of deprivation, lack of sleep is also a problem. This may not be an official ADHD symptom, but sleeping problems like insomnia can co-exist with ADHD. And because of this, it’s harder to recharge.

It’s challenging to experience these, I know. But with practice and positive resources, we can manage our burnout and avoid being trapped in the cycle of exhaustion.
Here are some practical suggestions if you catch yourself feeling worn down.

When faced with piles of work, using the Eisenhower Matrix can filter out which tasks can be done now or later. This can help avoid overwhelming ourselves with unnecessary responsibilities.

Setting healthy work boundaries can help regulate your workload. Start by setting a “cutoff time” so you’d know when to stop working. You can also decline when someone asks you to help them with something.

To summarize, ADHD and burnout commonly co-occur and can leave you depleted and empty. But remember that you are not superhuman, and you can only do so much. Prioritize your mental health, and practice putting yourself first – because YOU are important.
