It's pretty frustrating when you get all backed up to the brush hog (or finish mower, or tiller) and get the three point all hooked up and you get ready to extend the PTO to get it attached and it won't come out. Then you're stuck with the tractor in the way of getting at a good angle to pull and yank on the shaft until it extends...and maybe it won't! The purpose of this video is to discuss why that PTO shaft won't come out and some options to resolve the situation.

There are two pieces to a PTO shaft. One end that has a larger "female" shaft inside and the other with the smaller "male" part that slides inside of it. When the shaft won't move in or out usually there are one of two problems present, one that you can repair and one you can't.

Let's talk about the bad one first, the one you can't repair. If the shaft is bent anywhere in the area the two pieces slide together, it's done. Best option is to go buy a new PTO shaft from your local dealer or farm supply store. Any "tweak" of ever-so-slight bend in those shafts and it's productive life is over. That can happen when the implement is raised too high and contacts the deck of the implement, or when the implement (usually a cutter) is driven through a ditch. Here's a link to a video where I show what can happen:    • The Quickest and Easiest Way to Tear ...

Hopefully, if you have this happen, it's the other problem, and that is, they're just stuck. That happens a lot when the machine is stored outside and a little water gets in between those two shafts, forms some rust, and prevents them from sliding apart. In the video I give you a couple of options for getting them apart if that has happened. When you get them apart, make sure to keep a thin layer of grease on the parts that slide together from then on, hopefully you'll never have this problem again. Good luck!
