Our Universe is quite peculiar. Written into the laws of physics are various constants, numbers that govern the workings of the cosmos. If these numbers were slightly different, our universe would be broken – dead and sterile, unable to host the complexity for life. This fine-tuning of the physical laws has puzzled many physicists, with various ideas of a solution, from the theological to the metaphysical. But does the real answer lie in the multiverse?

Geraint F. Lewis is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Sydney. After studying in London and Cambridge, he was a researcher in the USA and Canada before coming to Australia in 2000. His current focus is the dark-side of the universe, the matter and energy that shape the universe. He also explores the fundamental nature of the universe, wondering about space, time and the meaning of an expanding universe.

Geraint spoke at ISS Online, the Professor Harry Messel International Science School hosted by the University of Sydney, July 2021.
