Kernan Manion, M.D. hosts this 6th installment of the series devoted to information you are unlikely to hear elsewhere during these challenging times facing patients and physicians in the U.S. and around the world.

Presentation Title:
“Are COVID related psychological syndromes mental illnesses?”

Learning objectives:

1) Recognize the array of “psychological distress” syndromes that may be confused with mental illness;

2) Understand how to make that diagnostic distinction, why that distinction is important, and the detrimental effects of misattribution;

3) Whether a “reaction syndrome” or a bona fide “mental illness,” explore the pros and cons of a physician getting some form of mental health help.

Kernan Manion, MD — CPR – Center for Physician Rights, Inc.

Dr. Kernan Manion is a psychiatrist who, in the context of his own burnout, shifted attention from clinical practice and entered the world of coaching and consulting. He helps physicians explore career transition and systematically address burnout. Intimately familiar with the healthcare culture, he also offers workshops to groups and hospitals. People come away from these services with clarity and renewed purpose. After being illegally fired for confronting dangerous mental health system deficiencies at a military base dealing with PTSD among returning warriors, he was thrust further into a Kafkaesque nightmare as his career was derailed by unlawful practices by his state medical board and its PHP. Connecting with others to whom this had been done and recognizing the sizable need for guidance and support in this unique arena, he founded CPR, The Center for Physician Rights, Inc (www.PhysicianRights.net). CPR is the only physician-centric advocacy organization providing guidance and support to physicians wrongfully ensnared in career-threatening proceedings in the medical regulatory therapeutic complex (MRTC). CPR is working aggressively to confront the cascade of MRTC abuses of the rights of physicians, PGYs and med students by medical boards, PHPs, and sham performance evaluation or peer review entities.
