Coronary stents have saved and improved the lives of millions of people. Nebraska Medical Center cardiologist Dr. Haysam Akkad explains how a stent is place inside a blocked artery and what a patient is likely to feel after the procedure is finished. Doctors place the stent by threading a wire through an artery in the leg until the stent is at the point where the artery blocked or narrowed. A tiny balloon inside the stent then inflates. The stent, a tiny wire mesh tube the holds the artery open, allowing increased blood flow.
