[00:00:02.040] - JJ Donaldson, owner of Merit Plumbing
Happy Friday, everyone. This is JJ with Merit Plumbing in Sarasota, Florida. Wanted to do a quick video today to show you where the leak indicator is on your water meter. So in your front yard here in Florida, it's really easy to find if you have a backflow prevention. So right there is your backflow preventer for this home.

[00:00:21.310] -
Right in front of the backflow preventor is going to be the water meter box. This is where your water meter is so you can easily lift open the cover. I've been in this one, so I know it's okay. But I always recommend use a screwdriver or a tool to pop open this cover first. Occasionally you can find snakes and other critters in the meter box.

[00:00:40.150] -
So better to use a tool to flip it open the first time rather than your finger. So this cover comes right off. And right here is your water meter. There's usually a little cover on it like this. So this is an older style analog water meter.

[00:00:58.540] -
And as you can see here, there's a little indicator right there, that's your leak indicator. Sometimes it's a circle like this, sometimes it'll be a triangle. You can see how this one is turning. There's no leak in this home. I just simply opened up a hose faucet a little bit so that you could see it turning.

[00:01:17.910] -
So this little indicator will turn any time water is moving in your home. So in Florida, we get a lot of slab leaks. So a lot of leaks in the piping, under the concrete floor. So if you've gotten a high water bill, one of the things you can check is you can come out and see this little indicator here. If you're certain that no water is being used in your home and this leak indicator is turning, then you may very well either have a leak in the yard where the water pipe goes up to the front of your home or under the concrete foundation of the home.

[00:01:53.430] -
Now one thing you can do first, I always tell people if you get a high water bill is the simplest and easiest thing to do is just put a few drops of food coloring inside the toilet tanks and wait ten to 15 minutes. And if water shows up a different color in the bowl, whatever the color of your food coloring is, then you've got something simple like a flapper leaking and you just have a running toilet. If you're certain that the toilets aren't running and you've got your high water bill, when you come out of this leak indicator is turning, you've got a leak somewhere else. Now a way to test to see whether that leak is between the street and the house is you can go up to the house and turn off the main water valve. And when you turn off the main water valve, if this leak indicator keeps turning, then you know the leak is in the yard somewhere because water has been turned off to the home.

[00:02:48.110] -
If the leak indicator stops, then you know there's no leak between the yard and the house, and the leak has to be under the home somewhere. So I hope that's a helpful video to you. Enjoy your weekend.
