In this video, Bram Vermeulen and cameraman Sven Torfinn were the first international camera crew to enter the country since the violence escalated in northern Mozambique.
This is one of the most beautiful places in Africa. But in recent months, more than half a million Mozambicans have fled the villages in the coastal strip of the northern province of Cabo Delgado. An Islamic group, which has sworn allegiance to Islamic State, is using maximum terror to make the villagers flee. Vermeulen tries to find out why this group is doing this.
To find the answer to that question, he travels to one of the islands off the coast that is as beautiful as it is macabre. The island was once a transit port for Mozambicans who were enslaved by the colonial Portuguese. During the search, it turns out that both the jihadists and the government and the South African mercenaries who bombard the coast from the air have a double agenda.
