In this short excerpt from our longer video on Medieval traveller Ibn Battuta, we look at Genghis Khan and his Mongol Empire. A young prince by the name of Temujin was having a serious bust-up with his one-time best mate Jamukha. Being a meritocratic kind of leader, compared to his now traditionalist rival, Temujin’s popularity soared and the two fell into inevitable conflict. At risk of diving into a long winding side-trip of my own, I’ll just precis this story by saying Jamukha lost and Temujin won, becoming the Genghis Khan we all know and love. Anyway, as you know, Genghis would go on and hammer the Jin dynasty of China – because why not- ; and being strapped for cash, in 1218 he sent a large caravan of merchants to the Khwarasmians, hoping to establish trade and diplomatic relations. The local governor was less then hospitable, discomfitting the embassy with the edge of the sword. Outraged, Genghis mobilised his entire army and laid waste to the entire middle East, before returning to his previous task of subduing China.
