Popcorn ceilings otherwise known as textured ceilings, cottage cheese ceilings or acoustic ceilings are basically ceilings with a spray on or paint on treatment which ends up looking like cottage cheese textures on your ceiling. It was very popular from the 1950’s to the 1980.

Making a popcorn ceiling meant you did not need to patch any cracks, fill up any small holes, and sand the ceiling down in any way, why? because all it took was priming with some paint and spraying the coat on and calling it a day. Popcorn ceilings were cost effective, time efficient, and a solution to sell a home faster. But the period of time when popcorn ceilings were “in” from the 50s to 80s, was during a period when asbestos was a high-demand building material in the U.S. Why they used asbestos?

its fibers provided strength without adding too much weight, insulation, and fire-resistant properties. It was only until 1978 under the Clean Air Act that the US banned it as it caused mesothelioma a type of lung cancer developed when inhaled. They later switched over to Styrofoam to create the same pattern and concept and made it safer this way. But that didn't mean existing supplies of popcorn ceiling material was all thrown out. Some of it was still used!

Typically the ceiling will not endanger your health as long as it remains completely undisturbed or properly covered. Remember, Not all popcorn ceilings have asbestos. So If you end up finding any and want it removed its best to do this by contacting an asbestos abatement professional who will properly remove it as well as check for lead in the paint at the same time.
