Introduction to Arabic Free Course - Part 2 - Pre-Islamic Arabic
In this module, you will learn about the ancient roots of the Arabic language. Arabic descends from a proto-Semitic language and contains many pro-Semitic features. Nabataean Arabic is the presumed dialect of Arabic spoken by the Nabataeans, and the Nabataean alphabet is considered the direct precursor of the Arabic script. The earliest known inscription in the Arabic alphabet was found in Saudi Arabia and dated to 470 AD. Old Arabic was originally written in various scripts, including Safaitic, Hismaic, Dadanitic, and Greek. The Wadi Rum desert in southern Jordan has numerous inscriptions that show the early development of alphabetical writing. The module also explores the burial monument of King Imur al Qays, written in the Nabatean Aramaic script and found in Syria.
