For seven generations, Volkswagen has nurtured and grown both the 'Golf' and 'GTi' nameplates into icons in their own rights, the former a halo for a sensible and practical family hatchback and the latter as proof that your life doesn't end with kids. And arguably the Mk7 Golf GTi was the very best Golf GTi they'd ever made, embodying the Jekyll/Hyde ethos that's always driven the Golf GTi to ever-lofty heights.
But this Mk8 model, on the surface, seems to have lost the plot. The interior while more upmarket doesn't seem as driver-focused as before, with too many gimmicky features detracting from the business of driving. And being locally-assembled for the first time, somehow we've also lost convenience features one could take for granted at a price point RM200k lower.
So has the Mk8 Golf GTi lost its charm? We find out.
