Q&A: "Who is Joseph in relation to Jesus, son of Mary? In the New Testament, Joseph is mentioned as being engaged to Mary and going to Bethlehem. What does the Quran say?" Dr. Shabir Ally says the Quran doesn't mention Joseph at all. Jesus is repeatedly referred to as the son of Mary -- he's named after his mother, and there is no reference to a father. Dr. Shabir explains that Muslim scholars have tried to reconcile the Biblical presence of Joseph with the Quranic narrative, but the absence of Joseph fits better with the Quran, which comes down strongly on people who are accusing Mary of adultery.
