Public transportation in Japan is probably the best in the world, but in a place like Hokkaido not everything is as well connected as Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka. In this Trip Report, we travel from Hakodate to Kushiro via a rental vehicle from Toyota Rent-a-Car. We drove our Corolla Cross across Hokkaido, visiting Niseko, Sapporo, Lake Akan & Kushiro.

It is possible to visit these places using public transport, but the transit time would not have been very efficient, not to mention lugging around huge heavy bags up and down the train platforms. And as such we have opted for the slightly more expensive, but infinitely more convenient option of driving ourselves around Hokkaido. I am a huge fan of driving and doing long trips, so I am always up for a long drive and especially in challenging surfaces.

Driving in Hokkaido in winter may not be suitable for everyone. It requires confidence, adaptability, and a sense of adventure. It is important to evaluate your driving skills and comfort level before embarking on a winter road trip.
