Well, here it is in all its ... glory? Our very own HGTV pilot episode. We worked for nearly two years with a wonderful production company and HGTV to create a series that would showcase TRUE restoration, preservation, and rehabilitation. Not renovation: not taking beautiful historic homes and stripping all their character from them and slathering the walls in grey. This show was initially conceived as something new and fresh for the network: actual historic restoration being done with a husband and wife team working side by side. Both partners having a part of all of the aspects of the work, physical and mental. This show was conceived to do away with the consumerist mentality and throw away culture we see so often on "home improvement" shows. That is what we envisioned, and what our wonderful production team at Wrigley media supported.

Then, somewhere between the 'act one' we posted a few weeks ago and this pilot, things went a little sideways. The formula was changed on us. Laine was removed from the work and fitted into gender stereotypical roles and Kevin was suddenly doing the heavy lifting with someone new and absent from the detail work. Somehow, slowly, the show we had originally envisioned and committed to morphed into the shadow of itself, and became something we don't think anyone could define or really understand, and in the end, that was the death of it.

The Act One is 100% us. It's what we do and how we do it. It's who we are and how we are right down to what we wear and how we do our hair. When we were sent this pilot we loved it; we think we loved it because we had worked so hard for so long and now there was A SHOW. But looking at it now....not so much. This isn't a true reflection of how we work. It's watered down and glossed over and just uncomfortable. It's a networks vision of "us", rather than our reality.

So, in the end, we are glad that THIS isn't the us on TV, because this isn't us....not really. We can see why it didn't get picked up. We are glad we can still share our reality with you here. We understand that restoration is coming to the network, and maybe for once it will look like REAL restoration, preservation and rehabilitation. We know without a doubt that behind the scenes each moment is being scripted and directed and edited to death. And over here? Over here we will be plugging along doing it the hard/dirty/sweaty/bloody way, slowly, as accurately as possible. But most of all, we'll be doing it our way. Thanks for being along for the ride!
