DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY JARIN BLASCHKE INTERVIEW

Robert Eggers’ films are notable for a number of reasons, but one of their most standout elements is cinematography. The man behind these indelible images is Jarin Blaschke, who has acted as director of photography on all of Eggers’ features to date. In this video, Blaschke sits down with us and discusses all things cinematography, from the craft to the career.

CINEMATOGRAPHER INTERVIEW

First, Blaschke discusses his path to becoming a director of photography. Long story short, it required a lot of work and patience. As Blaschke notes, no one cinematographer’s career looks the same, but most great DPs have an eye for detail and an insatiable love for filmmaking.

DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY RESPONSIBILITIES

Next, Blaschke walks us through all the work a cinematographer is faced with once they’ve joined a project. This work doesn’t begin on set– there’s extensive labor conducted throughout pre-production to make sure the camera department will be ready to go once filming commences.

Similarly, work doesn’t end when shooting wraps. Blaschke notes that a DP also has their hands in post-production, working closely with the colorist to make sure the image looks how they had imagined it during prep. Blaschke also explains that on his and Eggers’ upcoming film, Nosferatu, special effects work is much more prevalent. This requires him to oversee the VFX department’s work, ensuring it is in line with the overall look of the film.

Blaschke’s guidance is extremely helpful for anyone who is hoping to become a cinematographer, as well as for anyone who is hoping to work with one. It’s never as simple as pressing record on the camera.
