As often is the case we are starting our trip at the circle K in Altoona. And heading up to the Ocklawaha river. We are going to see the river as it was, and then see what they have done to it while trying to make a cross Florida canal. We will also be heading through Hopkins Prarie and some of the North East part of Ocala.

Finding Florida History one trail at a time, We took a ride up to the Ocklawaha river last week. Join us for a ride. Its name is a corruption of ak-lowahe, Creek for "muddy". The river was used extensively in the 19th century and early 20th century for steamboat transportation, most famously the Hart Line operated by Hubbard L. Hart. Narrow steamboats were used to navigate the constrictive and winding river. In the 1870s, the route between Palatka and Silver Springs became very popular, and was travelled by prominent figures such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ulysses S. Grant, Thomas A. Edison and Mary Todd Lincoln to visit Silver Springs.
