***CORRECTION: the language is not “extinct”, but DORMANT.

This video is about the Beothuk language. Quite possibly a language isolate, this language is native to Newfoundland, in Canada and has been DORMANT since 1829, almost 200 years. We show a few of the very few phrases, and then discuss the grammar features, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and the number system. The video is speculative, because there were never any long strings of text collected, and hardly any sentences at all, so all that we could guess is based on the patterns in individual words and the translations. The language appears to possibly have some Algonquin features but seems to be apart as well.
