Dr. Shabir Ally reviews Ryan Schaffner's dissertation entitled, "The Bible through a Qur’ānic Filter: Scripture Falsification (Taḥrīf) in 8th- and 9th-Century Muslim Disputational Literature." Schaffner overturns the theories of academics and Christian apologists who categorized early Muslim responses to the Bible across two periods. In the earlier period, according to them, Muslims had thought that the Bible is corrupt only by way of interpretation, but that the text was intact. In the second epoch, starting with Ibn Hazm, Muslims argued that the text itself is corrupt. Shaffner says that this categorization is incorrect. He presents early Muslim writers from the 8th and 9th centuries (prior to Ibn Hazm) who viewed the text of the Bible as corrupt. He also showed that Christian writers from the same period were responding to claims by Muslims that the Biblical text was corrupt. Dr. Shabir Ally says this thesis is a game changer for him.
